Alone...it’s a scary thought. Anyone who has thought about their future has had the thoughts of loneliness. It's natural, it’s a thought and feeling that we’ve all encountered at some point in time.
When I was 12/13 and was able to begin staying home by myself. I was terrified of being alone...I didn’t want to be left alone. My parents went out for the evening one time and my grandparents came over to spend sometime with me. When they decided to leave I put on a brave face and said my goodbyes. They got in their car and were driving down the street when this moment of panic, scariness and loneliness crept in. I stood outside my house crying hoping they would see me and come back. Now keep in mind this was before cell phones so I had to hope and pray they would see me and come back. Luckily my grandmother saw me and got my grandfather to turn the car around and they came back. It took sometime but I got comfortable with being alone when my family went out.
Now as an adult I occasionally get feelings of loneliness however it is in relation to my singleness. Any one of us that’s single gets these occasional feelings when we are home alone about how it would be nice to share an evening with someone. Basically just to have the companionship. I’ve discovered that when I get feelings of loneliness where I’d love to "not be alone", I spend the time talking to God, spending time in worship, or reading His word. I’ve discovered since starting a bible devotional that we are never alone. He is always with us and there are so many scriptures to back it up. I never realized how many stories there was in the bible about how God was always with his people and they were never alone.

In Exodus 33:11-23, Moses was asking God multiple times who He was going to send with him (Moses) as he lead the Israelite's to the promised land. Now I’m not too sure if Moses was lonely (which I find that hard to believe) or he just wanted company for the long journey, but he kept asking God, “Look, you tell me, ‘Lead this people,’ but you don’t let me know whom you’re going to send with me. You tell me, ‘I know you well and you are special to me.’ If I am so special to you, let me in on your plans. That way, I will continue being special to you. Don’t forget, this is your people, your responsibility.”
Moses wanted God to tell him he wasn’t alone. God answered in the most God way possible. “My presence will go with you. I’ll see the journey till the end.” My presence will go with you." His presence...not alone! I love that verse because we get a glimpse of a loving father who is always with us. I'll see the journey till the end! We are never alone as long as we believe the God is right here with us. When I get thoughts of loneliness I just remember that, yes in body I am alone...I’m the only one in my home. But in spirit I’m no alone. God knows us...He knows each and every one of us. “For I know you well and your are special to me. I know you by name.” (V17)
I encourage you to spend time discovering that you are not alone. God knows YOU by name. He knows what you’re feeling, what you’re doing, what you're thinking. He knows every hair on your head and He has such a remarkable plan for your life. All you have to do is believe and follow His word and leading. Don’t spend your season of waiting in loneliness and wondering why you're alone while everyone else has someone. Spend your season of waiting discovering the person God wants you to be. Be the person who can be alone and know that you’re really not alone.
